Business Exit Planning Seminar To Be Held

Holt County Economic Development and Central Nebraska Economic Development District will be sponsoring a Business Exit Planning Seminar to be held Monday, November 3rd at 5:30 PM at Doris' Diner in Stuart.

Odee Ingersoll with the Nebraska Business Development Center will be presenting a concise, information packed presentation on small business exit planning issues and solutions.

"This is one of the most important issues businesses need to address. Exit planning is essential because no matter what, someday you will transfer your business interest," said Nicole Sedlacek with Holt County Economic Development.
A 2008 NU - Gallup survey found that 52% of small business owners plan on leaving their business sometime within the next ten years. 30% plan on leaving in five years or less. Successful transition of existing business to new owners and a new generation must supplement business creation efforts.

A complimentary meal will be served at this seminar so reservations are necessary. Please call the Holt County Economic Development at (402) 336-1504 or email your reservation to nicole@holtcountynebraska.com by Friday, October 31st.

The event is also made possible with help from the Stuart Community Club and in part by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development administered by the Nebraska Rural Development Commission.

The HCED Newsletter is BACK. After several weeks of plagued computer issues, we are back in operation with our regular newsletter.

In previous newsletters we have shared a little piece of the framework that Holt County Economic Development uses to facilitate growth for our area. In this issue, we discuss the Leadership Development strategy.

Building stronger communities is a process that depends a great deal on volunteer leaders. By identifying, encouraging and preparing our current and future community leaders, we can help to ensure that the vision of a better Holt County community will last for many generations.

The HomeTown Leadership Institute, a countywide leadership program was formed in 2004 when the communities of Atkinson and Stuart teamed up to recruit and nurture new leaders in their respective communities. The effort soon spread to O'Neill and is now offered entirely countywide. The Institute has graduated 79 leaders and will be entering its fifth year of being offered.

In next month's issue we will discuss the Community Investment and Philanthropy component in more detail.

Nebraska Is 10th Best State For Business

FORBES Magazine says Nebraska is one of the ten best states for business. The Cornhusker State moved up from 17th to 10th in the magazine's 2008 list. Virginia was named the best state for doing business.

FORBES says Nebraska offers better quality of life, a better regulatory environment and lower business costs than most states. The magazine's quality of life index considers cost of living, quality of schools, crime rates, health care, and poverty rates.

Nebraska was ranked ninth in quality of life. Nebraska was ranked twelfth for its regulatory environment, which includes incentives for businesses, level of regulation, transportation and bond rankings. Nebraska was ranked 13th in the magazine's business cost ranking, which includes the cost of labor, energy and taxes.
